Adulting in 2020 Pt. 6
2020.51 Know You Are Good Enough
Why this matters: In a world of fake lives, materialistic values, and the social pressure to aesthetically perform, many of us forget that we are loved, worthy, and valuable before we even wake up in the morning. We loose sight of the beauty within and focus on our external and material worth. We want to be ‘influencers’ by having the best wardrobe, or traveling to the coolest places when we already have the ability to influence those around us through small acts everyday.
In this new year, ground yourself and know that you are good enough.
Then encourage and empower others.
Remind them they are good enough.
What you can do:
- Write yourself a love letter
- Look in the mirror and say “I am good enough”
- Appreciate one good thing about yourself each day. Make today’s appreciation different than yesterday’s
- Be the first to forgive your mistakes in any situation
- Give yourself a judgement free zone. Pick one thing that you do or have that you will not judge
Resources:
As I was planning out my new year, I wrote out my 50 goals. Well, really 49 because I was stuck on No37, Know Thyself.
I couldn’t think of what I could do to better know myself. Ironically I asked a friend. “If you thought there was one thing I should work one this year, what would it be?”
They said the following:
Be okay with doing less — spend time each week enjoying your free time. Work on seeking people’s approval less
Great! So I plugged it into my running list, right there at the 37th bullet point. Then before presenting them to you, I showed them all to my friend for feedback.
“Interesting….”, they said. “Why is Know Thyself number 37 on the list? I feel like this should be the most important goal.”
(I began to explain how the number didn’t have any weight and I had randomly put all of these working principles in a list, but I also knew that they were right.)
Here I was making a list of 50 new things I am going to do this year and the 37th thing was do less things. That doesn’t work.
So as much as I wanted to present 50 things I was going to push myself to accomplish so I could show how I am a super woman, I have instead narrowed down my list to 10 things I am going to do really well.
For your own journey, I hope you can learn from my moment of unfocused ambition and my friend’s wise advise and put yourself first. Lessen the load, hone in and focus on doing a few things really well. Choose a few valid goals from the list and master those, then add in a few more.
As scary as it is for me to do less and still believe I am ok,
Know you are super, know you are good enough.
We can both work on this together.
